We all have to learn and grow: expanding the products in the Math Lit Shop

The aim of the Math Lit Shop

In the beginning my aim was to support teachers teaching the high school subject Mathematical Literacy. My focus was on providing quality notes and exercises. One of my best sellers was my Grade 12 Mathematical Literacy Spring Book 2015. [For tests and exams in any subject go to http://www.teacher911.co.za/]

I worked on building up quite a lot of resources. All these resources stay in the shop forever, so don’t be scared that you will lose out. All my products are e-products (Word / Excel / PDF / PPT) which can be downloaded after purchase. There also a lot of freebies.

At the end of 2015 I resigned from my favourite school that I am still very passionate about – Rhenish Girls’ High School. That means that I can now (2016) focus my energy on writing new material and filling up my shop.

My own son is turning 5 this year. That, combined with the fact that I heard mothers say that they are clueless about Maths, about what their kids must be able to do and how they can help them – lead to the decision to add “Junior Maths” to my shop. Junior Maths starts at pre-school and goes up to Grade 9.

Is the name “Math Lit Shop” then still relevant? Absolutely. By helping kids with Math we create Mathematically literate children.

Currently I have only created products for pre-school, Grade R and Grade 1. My aim with these products is parent support. The teachers know what Math they have to do and they probably have files full of resources. In the meantime the parent is clueless about what his / her child must be able to do. And they are normally at a loss of how to help their own child. I’ve added “Parent information” at the end of some my products to tell parents how to use that work sheet and how to help his / her child. I have also put the CAPS document for Grade R to 3 Maths in my shop. (CAPS means the syllabus)

Some of the high school Math Lit notes, e.g. percentages, can also be used in Grade 8 and grade 9 Maths. Therefore I will place certain products under two or more headings.

To conclude: the Math Lit Shop will from now on contain Maths work sheets / notes for pre-school to Grade 9 as well as Mathematical Literacy notes and exercises for Grade 10 to 12.

[I haven’t ventured into Grade 10 – 12 Maths yet.]

ONLINE MATH QUESTIONS

The following sites covers the Math curriculum from Grade R to Grade 12. As far as I can see these sites have online questions where you have to click on the right answer. So it will be a lot of fun for kids or something to do on their tablets when they are bored.

Here is a site that has more than Maths. Educational games, etc. You'll have to search around to find what you like. They also have Smartkids books that they sell at prices less than R100.

WORK SHEETS FOR PARENTS TO HELP THEIR KIDS WITH

If it is work sheets that you are after - stuff that you can print and do at home... Junior Math Work Sheets

In Maths it is important to practice, practice, practice. There are lovely books in book shop but they cost a lot of money. Also, if your kid makes a boo-boo, it's in the book forever. My aim will be to put as many work sheets as possible in the shop so that parents can have free / cheap resources.

I prefer printable pages for my own children (I have two sons). You can quickly print out a page whenever they need it and if they make mistakes - recycle and print a new one.

Off course children have to make mistakes. If you never make a mistake, how will you learn? So don't chuck that "mistake page" immediately. Keep it so that your child can see where he went wrong and then attempt the same work sheet in another way.

PRICES: Some products are free. For others the prices range from R2,75 to R20. My aim is to try and keep everything at R5 or less. [However, I need to be paid for my labour, so if it is not R5, just know that a lot more work went into that one.]

All work sheets (except pre-school) will be in accordance with CAPS. [For people who don't understand this acronym, it is not something you put on your head, it is the syllabus. We don't use the word syllabus anymore.]

Feature product for Feb/March: Gr.12 Term 1 Tutorial

This tutorial is available in English and in Afrikaans.

  • Grade 12 Term 1 Tutorial covering the following topics: Rounding, Order of operations, Proportion, Percentages, Ratio, Rate, Tariffs and Break-Even Analysis, Budgets and Income-and-Expenditure-Statements (Term 1 topics in CAPS)
  • Most of the questions posed in this exercise are of a more difficult nature. This will help learners to practice answering questions that are on exam level.
  • Learners must do this tutorial in their own time. Any Mathematical Literacy learner can do this exercise but I definitely recommend it to keep gifted learners busy in class.
  • The tutorial includes a detailed memorandum.

Creating Mathematically literate children by having some Math fun

Although I started my shop with the focus on the high school subject Mathematical Literacy I've decided to add Junior Maths to my website.

I keep on hearing how bad South Africa's rating are concerning Mathematics - even (or especially?) on Primary school level.

The important thing is to make Maths fun while children are small.  I like to make colouring pages with numbers (or other Math stuff) on it. Then the focus is on enjoying the colouring and not on Maths.

Moms and Dads, here are some tips on how to start enjoying Maths at an early age:

  • Having stairs in your house is a bonus. Not only does it make you fit but you can also count out loud with your child every time you go up or down the stairs.

  • You don't have to be rich to help them understand basic concepts. Take all your cutlery from the drawer and mixed it together. Put it on the floor or carpet. Then give your child the cutlery tray and let him sort the cutlery into knives, forks, tablespoons and teaspoons.

  • Just sneak a Maths page in while they are colouring in other pictures.

  • Don't criticize. Make suggestions. For example, if your child colours in 3 crocodiles and then trace the number 4 symbol, say "Oops! That doesn't look like a 3 to me. Let's try again." [with a friendly and encouraging voice.] Praise her whenever she get anything right and tell her what a clever girl she is. [Or clever boy. I hate typing him / her all the time so I choose one sex per idea.]

  • Find funny songs about numbers on Youtube - songs with words that rhyme (easy to remember) of songs with a nice beat that kids can dance to.

FREE percentages exercise and memo

This week I am sending out a free percentage exercise. Calculating the original amount is a difficult concept for most learners to grasp. I taught my learners to use the direct proportion method.

Hierdie oefening is beskikbaar in Afrikaans en Engels. Indien jy nie hierdie oefening ontvang het nie, stuur asseblief 'n e-pos aan yes.to.math.lit@gmail.com om dit aan te vra.
